Analyst ratings
Ratings and price targets of Wall Street analysts for every company in QQQ, SPY, IWM, SMH, SOXL and SOXS, and for the other US stocks TipRanks’ feed of new ratings names, collected from TipRanks. New ratings appear here soon after TipRanks adds them — the actual delay is in the status line below; the page updates itself.
How prices react to analyst ratings
- Upgrades: on the rating’s day the stock beats SPY by +2.0% (median +1.1%), and does in 70% of cases. After that close: +0.30% the next day, +1.79% over 5 days.
- Downgrades: on the rating’s day −3.2% against SPY (median −2.0%), the stock lags the market in 79% of cases. After that close: −0.57% the next day, +5.10% over 5 days.
The move is the stock’s return minus SPY’s: on day 0 from the close before the rating to the close of the session it came out in (before 16:00 New York; later — the next session), after it from day 0’s close. Averages clip a single move at ±25% (a takeover bid, a trial result); “±” is the 95% interval of the average. Ratings counted: 425.

Moves as they are: an upgrade’s gain shows as plus, a downgrade’s fall as minus. “Its way” counts the stocks that moved against SPY the way the rating points; a rating that keeps its view has no way. Compare the later columns with the last row: it shows how the same kind of stocks went against SPY with no new view.

Here every move is turned the rating’s way: a downgrade followed by a fall counts as plus. Upgrades, new “buy” coverage and raised targets point up; downgrades, new “sell” coverage and cut targets point down.
Where the data comes from
- TipRanks collects the ratings and price targets of about 12,500 analysts. The collector reads its public pages from the site’s server; no TipRanks account is used.
- New ratings are found by reading each stock’s TipRanks forecast page, where every analyst’s latest rating comes with the name, firm and rank. TipRanks allows one request a second, so the collector reads first where a new rating most likely waits: stocks rated often more often than quiet ones, eight times as often around a company’s earnings report (37% of ratings come on the report day or the next trading day) and for three hours after a new rating (a third of ratings follow another on the same stock that day); every stock at least every 8 hours. TipRanks serves a cached copy of a page and rebuilds it on the read, so an old copy is read again 15 seconds later.
- Besides the companies of the ETFs, the collector reads every other US stock of $100M or more that TipRanks’ feed of the day’s newest ratings names (the “Others” chip): from then on its ratings are collected the same way.
- TipRanks adds most ratings at the time the analyst’s note comes out, mostly 5–9 a.m. New York time. The site’s own news name them later (StreetInsider arrives in a daily batch), so they do not speed this page up. TipRanks’ summary of a stock’s targets and its list of the day’s newest ratings are updated 40+ minutes late and serve only as a safety net.
- Consensus and averages are TipRanks’ own: ratings of the last 3 months; “top analysts” are those TipRanks ranks highest. An ETF’s consensus counts its holdings by their consensus, its target is weighted by holdings.
- The rank is the analyst’s place among all TipRanks analysts; “hits” is the share of their ratings that made money.
- “Move vs SPY” is how the stock moved against SPY on the rating’s day, from the close before to the close of the session it came out in, and after it. Closes come from each stock’s TipRanks page and, for SPY, from its TipRanks page and the site’s daily bars; the moves are worked out every half hour.
